How to Clean Glass Shower Doors and Keep Them Clear

If your shower screen has gone from clear to cloudy, knowing how to clean glass shower doors the right way can bring it back without scratching the glass or damaging the seals. In Singapore bathrooms, the culprits are a mix of soap scum, mineral spots left as water dries, and the mould that loves our humidity. This guide covers what each type of build up is, a safe deep clean, how to treat tracks and seals, and the two minute daily habit that keeps glass clear.

The biggest mistake we see is reaching for something abrasive when the glass looks hopeless. Scouring pads, powders and metal scrapers can leave fine scratches that hold grime even faster. Patience and the right method work better.

Whether your screen is a fixed panel in an HDB bathroom or a sliding door in a condominium, the same approach applies.

What is actually on your shower glass?

Cloudy shower glass is usually a combination of three things, and it helps to know which you are dealing with:

  • Soap scum: a greasy, whitish film made from soap, shampoo, body oils and skin cells. It feels slightly slippery or waxy and is worst at body height.
  • Water spots: small white rings or dots left when droplets dry and leave their dissolved minerals behind. They feel chalky and are often worst near the bottom of the panel.
  • Mould and mildew: black or pink spots, usually in the silicone seals, rubber strips and the corners of the frame rather than on the glass itself.

Soap scum responds to detergent. Mineral spots respond to a mild acid such as vinegar. Mould needs its own treatment and good ventilation. Using the right one for each saves a lot of scrubbing.

Safety and what to avoid

Bathrooms are small, enclosed and often poorly ventilated, which makes chemical safety especially important.

  • Never mix cleaning products. Bleach combined with vinegar or other acids, or with ammonia, releases toxic gases. Use one product at a time and rinse thoroughly with water before switching.
  • Ventilate. Open the window and run the exhaust fan, and leave the bathroom door open while you work.
  • Wear rubber gloves and consider eye protection when spraying above head height.
  • Protect natural stone. Vinegar and other acids can dull or etch marble and some other natural stone. Keep acidic cleaners off stone floors, walls and vanity tops, and rinse any drips immediately.
  • Check for coatings. Some shower glass has a factory applied protective coating. If you have the manufacturer’s care instructions, follow them, and test any cleaner on a small corner first.
  • Avoid abrasives. No steel wool, scouring powders, green scouring pads or metal scrapers on glass, chrome or frames.
  • Watch your footing. Wet tiles with cleaner residue are slippery. Rinse the floor and dry it before anyone uses the bathroom.

How to clean glass shower doors, step by step

This deep clean works for most screens that have built up a few weeks of film and spots.

  1. Rinse. Run warm water over the glass to loosen surface grime.
  2. Cut the soap scum. Mix warm water with a squeeze of mild dishwashing liquid. Wipe it over the glass with a non scratch sponge or microfibre cloth, working in overlapping circles. Dishwashing liquid is made to lift grease, which is what soap scum mostly is.
  3. Rinse again. Rinse all the detergent off with clean water before moving on.
  4. Tackle mineral spots. Spray the glass with a mix of white vinegar and water, roughly half and half. For heavy spots, use undiluted vinegar. Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, but do not let it dry. Keep it off any natural stone.
  5. Scrub gently. For stubborn areas, make a paste of baking soda and a little water and rub gently with a soft sponge. Baking soda is a mild abrasive, so test it on a corner first and use light pressure.
  6. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse the whole screen with clean water, from top to bottom.
  7. Squeegee and buff. Squeegee from top to bottom in overlapping strokes, then buff with a dry microfibre cloth for a streak free finish.

Very heavy build up may need two or three rounds over a few days rather than one aggressive session. Each round removes another layer without risking the surface.

How to remove water stains from glass that seem permanent

Water stains that have been left for months can be stubborn. Try these, one at a time, rinsing well between each:

  • Vinegar compress: soak paper towels in white vinegar and press them flat against the stained area. Leave for up to 30 minutes, keeping them damp, then remove, scrub gently and rinse.
  • Lemon juice: a mild acid that works in the same way on smaller areas. Rinse afterwards.
  • Baking soda paste after the vinegar: once the vinegar is rinsed off, a gentle baking soda paste can lift the softened deposits.

If marks remain after several careful attempts, the glass surface itself may be etched. Etching happens when mineral deposits are left on glass for a long time and slowly damage the surface. Etched glass feels rough even when clean, and no cleaning will fully reverse it. At that point, the realistic options are living with it or asking a glass specialist for advice. This is why the daily habit below matters so much.

Cleaning the tracks, seals and frame

The glass may look clean, but the tracks and seals are where grime and mould hide.

  1. Tracks: scrape out loose debris with an old toothbrush or a cotton bud, then wipe with soapy water. For mineral build up in the track, a little vinegar on a cloth helps. Rinse and dry.
  2. Rubber seals and sweeps: wipe with warm soapy water, getting into the folds. If they are torn or permanently black, they may need replacing. Femme5 does not do bathroom repairs, so use a qualified contractor or the screen supplier.
  3. Silicone joints: for mould spots on silicone, a bleach solution diluted as the label directs, applied on a cloth, may lighten them. Do this only after all vinegar has been rinsed off the glass, tracks and frame, ideally on a separate day, and never use bleach with vinegar or any other cleaner. Wear gloves, keep the window open and keep children and pets out of the bathroom. Rinse well. Mould that has grown deep into the silicone will not fully come out and usually means the silicone needs redoing by a professional.
  4. Frames and handles: wipe chrome or aluminium frames with soapy water and dry them to avoid spots. Avoid acids on anodised or coloured finishes unless the manufacturer allows it.

Grout and tiles around the screen often need attention at the same time; our guide on how to clean grout safely covers this, and a blocked shower head can leave extra spots on the glass, so see how to clean a shower head too.

The daily habit that keeps shower glass clear

The single most effective thing you can do is also the simplest: squeegee the glass after every shower.

  • Keep a squeegee hanging inside the shower so it is always within reach.
  • After showering, pull it down the glass from top to bottom in overlapping strokes. It takes under a minute.
  • Wipe the bottom edge and track with a small towel or cloth.
  • Leave the door slightly open, the window open or the exhaust fan running so the area dries quickly.

Removing water before it dries means minerals and soap never get a chance to settle. Families who adopt this habit find they need a deep clean far less often.

Other habits that help

  • Switch to liquid body wash if bar soap leaves heavy scum on your screen.
  • Give the glass a quick wipe with soapy water once a week, before film builds up.
  • Rinse shampoo splashes off the glass before they dry.
  • Keep the bathroom well ventilated every day, not just on cleaning day. As HealthHub’s guidance for parents of children with asthma notes, damp environments encourage mould growth.

If you have a helper, the squeegee habit is easy to add to her routine, but it works best when everyone in the family does it after their own shower. Our article on toilet bowl stains covers the other common bathroom problem caused by minerals in water.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best homemade cleaner for shower glass?

Warm water with a little dishwashing liquid removes soap scum, and a mix of white vinegar and water removes mineral spots. Use them one after the other, rinsing in between, rather than mixed together. Finish with a squeegee and a dry microfibre cloth. Never combine vinegar with bleach, and keep vinegar off natural stone.

Can I use a razor or scraper on shower glass?

We advise against it. Metal blades can scratch glass, especially if grit is trapped underneath, and may damage any protective coating. Gentle methods such as a vinegar compress followed by a baking soda paste and a soft sponge are safer. If deposits will not shift, the glass may be etched and cleaning will not fix it.

How often should I deep clean my glass shower doors?

With a daily squeegee and a quick weekly wipe, a deep clean every month or two is usually enough. Without the daily habit, you may need to deep clean every couple of weeks to stop soap scum and mineral spots building up into stains that are hard to remove.

Why does my shower glass still look cloudy after cleaning?

Leftover cleaner, a lint shedding cloth or drying in streaks can leave a haze, so rinse thoroughly and buff with clean microfibre. If the cloudiness remains and the glass feels rough when clean and dry, the surface may be etched from long term mineral deposits, which cannot be fully reversed by cleaning.

Conclusion

Clear shower glass comes from treating each problem with the right tool: detergent for soap scum, a mild acid for mineral spots, and careful, separate treatment for mould in the seals. Avoid abrasives, never mix cleaning products, and keep acids away from natural stone.

Most of all, build the squeegee habit. A minute after each shower prevents the slow build up that eventually leads to etched, permanently cloudy glass.
